Eyelid surgery at UTMB Health

Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of the eyelids; it may be performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both.

Over 90 percent of communication is nonverbal. Much of this is communicated through your facial expressions, especially around the eyes and forehead. Heavy or drooping eyelids can come across as low-energy, sad or tired. Additionally, drooping eyelids can interfere with your field of vision. Others may seek double eyelid surgery to give the appearance of larger, brighter eyes. This surgery may help those who wish to improve their appearance as well as those experiencing functional problems with their eyelids.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should get this procedure and what are the expected results?

Individuals seeking a refreshed, youthful and brighter look will benefit from eyelid surgery, especially those with heavy or drooping eyelids. In addition to a fresh look, excess skin can be reduced as well as bags and puffiness. This will reduce fine lines, wrinkles and crow’s feet.

What should I expect before my procedure?

During your consult, we will do a full evaluation of your facial structures and discuss your goals and recommend an individualized surgical plan that takes those goals into account, as well as ethnicity and cultural heritage. All surgeries will include incision points in the lash line or creases in the eyelid so that there will be minimal visible scars, and patients will be under general anesthesia in an operating room. Most surgeries take one to two hours.

What should I expect after my procedure?

Typically, an overnight hospital stay is not needed, and you can go home the same day. Your specific recovery will depend upon the tailored package you choose, but for most patients, some pain and swelling around the eyes will occur. Your eyelids will also feel tight. Ice and eye drops will reduce this. After one to two weeks, you may feel well enough to resume normal activities, and stitches may be ready to come out. However, don’t rush outdoors without proper protection, such as dark sunglasses. Results should be apparent after the first month.

Why should I consider surgery?

Eyelid surgery is a permanent treatment for a long-lasting look. Nonsurgical options like dermal fillers and Botox injections provide temporary results that need regular maintenance.

What if I’m not ready for surgery?

If you feel a surgical intervention isn’t for you at this time, we offer a range of fillers, injections and skin care treatments that are easy and non-invasive to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and crow’s feet. See our non-surgical services.

Can this be combined with other procedures?

Yes! Common surgeries combined with an eyelid surgery include facelift or brow lift. Other body contouring procedures can be done at the same time. Schedule a consult with one our surgeons to determine what is the best approach for you.
