Frequently Asked Questions
Why would I need/want this service?
A woman who has experienced changes in her body as a result of pregnancy and breastfeeding might consider a mommy makeover. The ideal candidate will have returned to her pre-pregnancy weight and is not planning to have any more children, as pregnancy after surgery will compromise results. Candidates should be physically healthy, maintain a stable weight, and should not smoke.
What to expect if I get this done?
A mommy makeover restores a woman’s body back to its pre-pregnancy shape. You will see the final results of your mommy makeover several months after the surgery is complete. This will give your breast implants adequate time to settle and allow your scars to begin fading, although some visible scarring will remain. With your final results, you will be able to appreciate a renewed sense of self-confidence and pride in your appearance.
What should I expect before my procedure?
A consultation with one of our surgeons will be the best way to determine if you are a candidate for a mommy makeover, what procedures are optimal to help achieve your goals, and what steps you will need to take prior to surgery. You will get to review before and after pictures of other patients with similar body types to get an idea of what your result may look like. The surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia; the amount of time it takes will depend on the specific procedures you are planning to have.
What should I expect after my surgery?
Your incisions will be covered in dressings or bandages and will be wrapped in an elastic bandage or compression garment to minimize swelling. A slim tube will be placed under the skin to provide temporary drainage of any excess blood or fluid. You will receive instructions to follow at home and prescriptions for medication, and schedule a follow-up appointment with your surgeon. You should expect to keep your support garments on per your surgeon’s instruction, and limit activity. Be sure to follow your surgeon’s instructions carefully.
Is the mommy makeover done all at one time?
Most of the time the mommy makeover is a single-stage procedure. Whether your procedure happens in one or two stages depends on the extent of your procedures and the areas that will be addressed in the surgery. Your plastic surgeon will discuss these factors with you ahead of time so you will be well prepared for the steps your specific package entails.
How soon after childbirth may I get a mommy makeover?
It is recommended that you wait to have a mommy makeover after returning to your pre-pregnancy weight, and three to six months after you have completed breast feeding. Weight loss after undergoing a mommy makeover may compromise your results, so you should be at your goal weight before undergoing the procedure. You will also want your breasts to settle into their natural position after breastfeeding, before undergoing any breast procedures.
Is an overnight stay offered?
Unique to UTMB, an overnight stay in our modern, state-of-the-art hospitals is an option that many other surgeons do not offer. An overnight stay can be added for an additional fee and can alleviate the need for transportation and hotel arrangements immediately after your procedure. Additionally, you will have trained nursing and medical staff watching over you the first night and will watch to ensure that drains are functioning, help change dressings and any pain or discomfort is professionally managed.
