Frequently Asked Questions
Why would I need/want this service?
Liposuction may be a good option for individuals who are bothered by the appearance of excess fat deposits in any location of the body, that they have been unable to change through fitness and weight control efforts. Liposuction candidates should be within 30% of their ideal weight with firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone. Candidates should be physically healthy, maintain a stable weight, and should not smoke.
What to expect if I get this done?
Your final result will be an improved body contour, which will become apparent after the swelling and fluid retention subside. The results of this procedure are generally long-lasting as long as you maintain a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle, but you will likely see some subtle changes in firmness simply due to the natural aging process.
What should I expect before my procedure?
A consultation with one of our surgeons will be the best way to determine if you are a candidate for liposuction, if liposuction is the best option to achieve your desired results, and what steps you will need to take prior to surgery. You will get to review before and after pictures of other patients with similar body types to get an idea of what your result may look like. The surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia; the amount of time it takes will depend on the amount of fat.
What should I expect after my surgery?
Your incisions will be covered in dressings or bandages and will be wrapped in an elastic bandage or compression garment to minimize swelling. A slim tube may be placed under the skin to provide temporary drainage of any excess blood or fluid. You will receive instructions to follow at home and prescriptions for medication, and schedule a follow-up appointment with your surgeon. You should expect to keep your support garments on per your surgeon’s instruction, and limit activity. Be sure to follow your surgeon’s instructions carefully.
Will liposuction improve the appearance of cellulite?
No, while liposuction provides an effective solution for the removal of excess fat, this procedure is not recommended as a treatment for cellulite or loose, sagging skin.
If I am overweight, should I consider liposuction?
An individual who is overweight, but whose body fat is distributed proportionately should not consider liposuction. Individuals who have reached a healthy weight, but feel their body is out of proportion due to fat pockets that are unresponsive to diet or exercise, is more likely to benefit from liposuction.
Can this be combined with other procedures?
Yes! Often times liposuction is combined with other procedures. The fat cells in the areas receiving liposuction can be harvested, purified and grafted to other areas, effectively moving fat from an area you do not want, to an area that needs more volume. Other patients choose to combine liposuction with body contouring or a face or neck lift. All of these procedures can be completed at the same time. Please consult with one of our surgeons to determine the best approach for you. Additionally, these procedures can be done at the same time as medically indicated procedures so that you only need to have one procedure with less recovery time than if performed separately. We can work with your UTMB surgeon to ensure a streamlined process and you receive the best care possible
