Hyperbaric Medicine is the medical specialty that utilizes hyperbaric oxygen for the medical treatment of complex conditions.
Hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) is the administration of 100% oxygen inhaled at a pressure greater than sea level to promote healing of complex medical conditions.
Hyperbaric specialists utilize HBOT for medical conditions which may be failing usual care, such as nonhealing wounds, or for which there is no definitive therapeutic alternative, such as late effects of cancer radiation treatment.
Certified specialists in Undersea and Dive Medicine, also known as Hyperbaric Medicine, at the UTMB Hyperbaric Center prevent and treat medical complications of divers due to increased ambient pressure or pressure changes in gas underwater as well as other individuals working in altered atmospheric conditions.
Undersea Medicine (or Diving Medicine) is the study of the underwater and high-pressure environments, immersion effects, marine life injuries, and diving-related issues.
For a diving emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
Our colleagues at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston staff the sole regional center with emergency hyperbaric capability at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center if needed.
