Dr. Jacquelen Svoboda

UT System Regents name Svoboda 2022 Outstanding Teacher

The University of Texas System Board of Regents named Dr. Jacquelyn Svoboda as one of its 2022 Outstanding Teachers.

Svoboda, an assistant professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Nursing, is also director of Educational Innovations at UTMB School of Nursing and coordinator of the BSN BAMBI Advocacy Student Scholars Program.

“My teaching philosophy is grounded first and foremost in valuing the learner as a person and identifying innovative ways to reach students where they are,” she said. “When we value the learner, the outcome is always focused on seeking ways to mentor them to success.”

In October, The University of Texas System Board of Regents named 14 educators at UT institutions among its 2022 Outstanding Teachers. Recipients will each receive a medallion and a check for $25,000 in recognition of their contributions to student success and learning. The Board of Regents will formally recognize recipients at the November board meeting.

“Teaching excellence is at the core of our mission and helps ensure students with degrees from UT institutions are prepared to succeed in an ever-competitive and dynamic workforce,” Chancellor James B. Milliken said. “The UT presidents and I express profound gratitude to the Board of Regents for their continued support of honoring exceptional teachers.”

Nominees undergo a series of rigorous evaluations by peer faculty and external reviewers. The review panels consider a range of activities and criteria in their evaluations of a candidate’s teaching performance, including classroom expertise, curricula quality, innovative course development and student learning outcomes.

Svoboda also continues her clinical practice in the UTMB OB/Gyn department as an Advanced Practice Nurse. She has a special interest in maternal health equity, social justice in healthcare, correctional health care and policy related to women’s health.

“I am grateful for all the opportunities UTMB has provided me over the past 15 years and to each mentor, leader, colleague and student who has supported this work,” Svoboda said. “This award also recognizes the dedication that UTMB and the School of Nursing has to educational innovation and faculty engagement.”
