Overview:
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD, is a lung condition that makes it hard to breathe. It happens when the airways in the lungs become swollen and damaged, making it difficult for air to move in and out. COPD usually develops over time and gets worse if not treated. The most common causes are smoking, breathing in harmful chemicals, or being around air pollution for a long time. Some people may also have a genetic risk for COPD.
Symptoms:
- Shortness of breath, especially during physical activities
- Chronic cough with mucus
- Wheezing and chest tightness
- Fatigue and frequent respiratory infections
Treatments/Procedures:
Medications and therapy for COPD focus on improving breathing and managing symptoms through inhalers, medications, oxygen therapy, and pulmonary rehabilitation, which includes exercise training, breathing techniques, and lifestyle counseling. For severe cases, advanced treatments like lung volume reduction surgery, bronchoscopic procedures, bullectomy, or lung transplant may be considered to improve lung function and overall quality of life.
