Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Breathe easier. Live better.

When lung disease makes it hard to do the things you love, pulmonary rehabilitation can help you take control of your respiratory health. Certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, our program is designed to meet your unique needs—helping you build strength, boost energy, and improve your quality of life.

Pulmonary rehabilitation is an outpatient program for people with chronic lung disease, like COPD, who experience respiratory symptoms that limit daily activities or quality of life. Through exercise, education, and personalized care, pulmonary rehab helps reduce symptoms and improve everyday function. Whether managing a chronic condition or recovering from lung surgery, it empowers you to feel stronger and do more of what matters to you.

 Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is pulmonary rehabilitation?
Pulmonary rehabilitation is an outpatient program for people who have been diagnosed with chronic lung disease, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), who have respiratory symptoms resulting in decreased daily activities or a decrease in quality of life. Pulmonary rehab has been shown to reduce symptoms of chronic lung disease and help improve functions of everyday life.
  • What can I expect at UTMB Pulmonary Rehab?

Before beginning the program, you will undergo some required testing that can include pulmonary function testing and a six-minute walking test (unless recently done within 6 months). Once the required testing has been completed, our physician will determine if you are eligible for the pulmonary rehab program.

UTMB’s rehab program is offered by the Pulmonary Department. Most programs are held two days a week for up to 12 weeks and follow an education and exercise program tailored to each individual’s needs and health condition.

    Each session will include:

    • Physician-prescribed exercise on a treadmill, a stationary bike, an arm ergometer, hand weights, and occasionally walking up and down stairs.
    • Pulse and oxygen saturations during and after exercise.
    • Breathing retraining and coaching.

A specially trained UTMB Respiratory Therapist leads the program, carefully monitoring patients during each session. Education covers topics like living with COPD, stress reduction, nutrition, and more. After completing pulmonary rehab, participants are encouraged to continue an at-home exercise program to maintain optimal health.

  • How do I get started with Pulmonary Rehabilitation at UTMB?

You will need a referral from your primary care physician or lung specialist. Contact us at UTMB to learn more about the program and schedule your initial assessment.

If you don’t already have a referral from your physician, talk to him or her about pulmonary rehabilitation and how it might help you. For more information about your COPD, visit www.copdfoundation.org

  • Is Pulmonary Rehabilitation covered by insurance?
Many insurance plans, including Medicare, cover pulmonary rehabilitation for eligible patients. It is best to check with your provider to confirm coverage and any required documentation.
