Information About Eye Health

The American Academy of Ophthalmology provides extensive eye care information on line through eyeSmart™, a public awareness campaign that empowers Americans to take charge of their eye health. eyeSmart emphasizes the need for Americans to know their risk factors for eye diseases, infections and injuries, and how ophthalmologists can help prevent, diagnose and treat eye conditions.

Clinical Trials

Ophthalmology Clinical Research Center (OCRC)

The Ophthalmology Clinical Research Center conducts clinical trials for a range of eye diseases. Patients, doctors, and sponsors of clinical trials benefit from our clinical research facility, which allows research to be conducted efficiently without disruption of the normal clinical flow.

UTMB eye doctors are testing promising new treatments to retain and even restore vision in the department's Ophthalmology Clinical Research Center (OCRC).

Established in 2007, the center is located at the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, 700 University Blvd., on Galveston Island. OCRC gives department faculty the opportunity to conduct clinical trials for breakthrough drugs and equipment in the treatment of eye diseases.

Having a clinical research center on site generates huge benefits for our Eye Center patients and our faculty.

Through the OCRC, our doctors translate basic research into clinical practice faster and more directly.

The OCRC team of doctors, nurses, research coordinators, and photographers coordinate resources and efforts to conduct clinical trials from beginning to end. Patient recruitment, study protocol adherence, patient examination and treatment, analysis of data and trial close-out are managed centrally.

The department is the perfect research environment. It has a research lab, a clinical research center, two eye centers and a dozen eye doctors in a wide range of specialties.

That's what makes us strong. We have a complete research environment from research lab to patient care.
