FAQs

  • Should I see a Primary Care Provider (PCP) for an ADHD evaluation?

Yes, most people begin with their Primary Care Provider (PCP). For children, your pediatrician may require that you complete an initial assessment packet before referring you to a specialist. Starting with your PCP ensures that you have the necessary forms filled out to begin the evaluation process.

  • Why not start with a Behavioral Health Specialist?

Your Primary Care Provider (PCP) is trained to assess and treat most ADHD cases, often have better availability, and can get you started quickly. For complex cases, they’ll refer you to a specialist if needed. Some insurance plans may also require a referral.

  • What forms need to be submitted before my appointment?

Specific forms must be completed by a parent or guardian and all relevant teachers for both initial and follow-up appointments for children. The completed forms are submitted to a secure database and reviewed by our team before your appointment can be scheduled. This step is crucial to ensure we have all the necessary information to provide the best care.

  • Why do I need to complete the assessment forms before the appointment?

The information provided in the assessment forms is vital for an accurate assessment of ADHD symptoms. Without the completed forms, we cannot proceed with scheduling your appointment. This allows our specialists to review the symptoms and concerns thoroughly before your visit, ensuring a more effective evaluation process.

  • What is the NICHQ Vanderbilt Assessment?

The NICHQ Vanderbilt Assessment is a standardized tool used to evaluate symptoms of ADHD. It includes informant forms for both parents and teachers. The initial assessment has two main parts: a symptom assessment and an evaluation of performance impairment. It also screens for common comorbid conditions like oppositional-defiant disorder, conduct disorder, and anxiety/depression.
